Emmaus was diagnosed with TSC at birth, while several cardiac rhabdomyomas were found at 34 weeks gestation. Emmaus has epilepsy and autism and is currently a fourth grader with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). She also receives physical, occupational and speech-language therapies at her school.
Emmaus is a friendly girl who loves music and dancing. She enjoys her friends and is always up to snuggle. She has an infectious laugh and what she lacks in words she makes up for with personality. She has two younger sisters, Shiloh and Lennon.
Her parents, Dan and Laurisa, consider her speech emerging at this point, but Emmaus also uses an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device to help her communicate.
According to her parents, “Emmaus may have TSC, but TSC doesn’t have her!” They also like this quote by Brene Brown: “I now see how owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing we will ever do.”
